Monsoon Hits Mangaluru, Normal life affected
Karnataka’s coastal districts on Tuesday witnessed heavy rainfall that caused waterlogging and uprooting of trees. Heavy rainfall had lashed parts of Mangalore and Udupi on Monday too. The schools and colleges will remain closed on Wednesday.
Prime minister Narendra Modi in a tweet has said that he has instructed officials to ensure all possible assistance in the affected areas and prayed for the safety and well being of those affected by heavy rains .
Karntaka chief minister H D Kumaraswamy took stock of the situation and directed the deputy commissioner to take assistance from coast guard to rescue people if such situation arises . The chief ministers office in a press release said that the CM has instrcted the administration to take necessary precautionary measuresto mitigate severe damages and prevent loss of lives .
Water-logging in streets of Mangalore after heavy rain lashed parts of the city was a common sight on Tuesday , boats were pressed in service to ferry people to safer locations . Several trees were uprooted in Udupi and adjoining town and communication and electricity was affected due to this .
Since Mangaluru is next to the Arabian Sea, high tide is preventing rainwater from draining out to the sea, Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner S. Sasikanth Senthil said
. The administration is attending to problems at the affected areas.
The Indian Meterological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall over coastal Karnataka for the next five days.
