Ramzan Food, Iftar and beyond
If in the earlier days it was a feast for the senses at Russel Market and Russel Street in Shivajinagar which is one of the oldest Iftar points of the city , now in recent years the focus has shifted to MM Road and Mosque Road in Frazer Town, Bangalore.
Thousands throng the food stalls on Mosque Road and MM Road every evening , as they are spoilt for choices at the Food street concept. Foodies from across the city , especially those who love non veg varieties make it a point to visit atleast once during Ramadan
Not just the popular restaurants put up tents outside their outlets during Ramadan but many part time food stalls crop up with a variety of Iftar items. The Foodstreet or Khao Gali concept comes to life during the month of Ramadan. Popular joints like Savoury Restaurant, Karama Restaurant and Empire are quite popular with Iftar items.
These restaurants also rustle up Arabic food, besides Indian and Chinese, considering the Arab student population in the area. On this T-stretch popular are the stalls selling goat brain puffs, skewered camel, grilled quail and veal kebab.
For the food lovers there are stalls which sell the famous Pista House Haleem, Chichaba’s Taj and Richies Rahhams for Bangalore-style Dakhani Mutton Biryani, Charminar Kabab Paradise for Nizam rolls and Mutton Seekh roll this area is a foodie’s delight.
Dripping hot, Molten Khova in crispy, oven-baked pie, the Khova Naan, Mutton Samosa, Brain Puffs, etc. make any visitor to the iconic Albert Bakery dating back to 1902 in this area nostalgic.
Deliciously sinful delicacies adorn every outlet or makeshift stalls. Wisps of smoke emanate from barbeques/tandoors in the air and disappear in the medley of sound and color. One can pick from Nihari, Shami Kebab and variety of Chicken items, then follow it with a range of sweets and phirni.
Besides the tandoor items and biryanis, one can feast on famous Baida Paranthas, Vada Pav, Bheja (brain) or Kaleja (liver) Fry, and what not. While the Rozdaars ( fasting community) make it a point to visit these before the iftar time or at the Iftar time , the foodies throng the place till late in the night to get a taste of the Ramadan deliccies. One can top up the dinner with the luscious Falooda. Also a cup of hot cup of Tea at the ever crowded Savera Tea Centre
