As the list of Corona positives crosses the 5000 mark here’s a host of updates on the coronavirus outbreak round the clock, from expanding containment zones and lockdown enforcement to new hospitals and helpful initiatives, and so much more. Here are some useful bits of information from Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Pune and Hyderabad.

Coronavirus in Mumbai: Important updates
More cases: Mumbai reported 116 new cases on Tuesday, it’s highest jump in a day, bringing the total number of cases in the city to nearly 650. The number of cases in Dharavi, a slum in Mumbai which is one of Asia’s largest, reported two new cases, bringing the total here to nine.

Masks compulsory in public: The Maharashtra government has made it compulsory to wear masks in public places, invoking provisions under the Epidemic Diseases Act. Those violating the order could be arrested.

Two hospitals sealed: Two hospitals in Mumbai—Wockhardt Hospital and Jaslok Hospital—have been declared containment zones after a number of doctors and nurses tested positive for the novel coronavirus. A nurse at Breach Candy Hospital has tested positive for COVID-19, following which all staff is being tested.

More containment zones: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has sealed more areas in the city. The containment zones include Jay Prakash Road in Khar East, Government Colony in Bandra East and Kolivery Village in Santacruz East. Kala Nagar in Bandra East, near the chief minister’s residence ‘Matoshree’, was also declared a containment zone after a tea vendor from the area tested positive for COVID-19. Dharavi, Worli Koliwada and Behrampada are among other containment zones in Mumbai. No hawkers or stores, besides chemists, are allowed to operate in these areas.

Grocery delivery to be streamlined: The BMC has partnered with large retailers and online delivery platforms to make sure citizens don’t run out of supplies. Delivery portals like Zomato, Swiggy, Grab and Dunzo have also brought local grocers on board to deliver both groceries and medical supplies.

Coronavirus in Pune: Important updates
New cases: Pune reported 18 new cases on Tuesday, according to Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope.

Parts of Pune sealed, masks mandatory: The Pune Municipal Corporation has sealed some densely populated areas, including Ravivar Peth, Guruvar Peth, Budhwar Peth, Nana Peth, the stretch from Maharashi Nagar to Regional Transport Office as well as areas in Kondhwa. All entry into or exit from these neighbourhoods will be prevented. Essential services, too, will be limited. The city administration has also made the use of masks mandatory.

Coronavirus in Delhi-NCR: Important updates
New cases: Delhi reported 51 new cases on Wednesday, bringing the total in the union territory to 576. Around 200 people from JJ Colony in Noida’s Sector 5 were taken to a quarantine zone in Greater Noida on Tuesday night, as part of a cluster containment exercise. They were identified as contacts of four patients from the area who had tested positive for the disease earlier.

Aggressive testing is on: The Delhi government is set to conduct one lakh tests for COVID-19 in coronavirus hotspots in the city. These include three neighbouring districts of Gurugram—Faridabad, Mewat and Palwal. After Kerala, Delhi-NCR now has its first ‘telephone booth’ testing centre. Set up at a hospital in Ghaziabad, it allows for contactless collection of samples for testing from a glass and aluminium booth.

Hotels to the rescue: While announcing his five-point plan to tackle the spike in the number of coronavirus cases in the capital, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that if the need arises and Delhi report 30,000 active patients, the government will take over 8,000 beds in hospitals and 12,000 hotel rooms for them, while around 10,000 patients will be accommodated in banquet halls and dharamshalas.

Sealed: Noida and Ghaziabad in the Delhi-NCR region are among the 15 districts that the Uttar Pradesh government has decided to completely seal from midnight tonight till 30 April. The other districts include Agra, Lucknow, Bareilly, Meerut, Varanasi, Shamli and Saharanpur. No one will be allowed outdoors without a mask.

Coronavirus in Bengaluru: Important updates
Ola, Uber as emergency vehicles: Ola and Uber have partnered with the Karnataka Health Department to bring medical emergency services to those advised “non-ambulatory, prolonged treatment” in Bengaluru. One can book these vehicles by calling two dedicated numbers— 9154153917 and 9154153918—or by logging into the Ola or Uber apps. Both aggregators will provide 100 cabs each for the service. Karnataka has banned the movement of all four- and two-wheelers till 14 April.

Coronavirus in Kolkata: Important updates
Cases: Kolkata has 29 confirmed cases, so far. Eight new cases emerged across West Bengal on Tuesday.

Special service for senior citizens: Under ‘Hello Beta’, an initiative of NK Realtors and NGO Mukti in Kolkata, essential items will be delivered to the elderly in the city during the lockdown. Senior citizens who live alone can place orders for grocery, vegetables, drinking water and medicines for delivery within 48 hours. The service is currently available in the areas of Tollygunge, Ballygunge, Garia, Behala, Ruby Hospital and Salt Lake, with the two partners looking to extend it to New Alipore, Kankurgachi and Shyambazar from Thursday.

Good meals, home-delivered: The kitchens of THE Park Kolkata, Hyatt Regency Kolkata and JW Marriott Hotel Kolkata are now open for special deliveries. The hotels have come up with fresh menus of their most loved dishes from which people can place orders. A number of star restaurants have also begun taking home delivery orders, including Mainland China, Oh! Calcutta, Afraa, Sonar Toree and The Orient. And Flurys, too!

Feeding everyone, including strays: Community kitchens have cropped up in Kolkata to feed the strays. Volunteers cook the food in kitchens near Khanna cinema and in Behala and then distribute them in their areas. The team of over 100 stays connected through a WhatsApp group.

More masks coming through: The University of Calcutta’s chemistry department is using its manpower and labs to produce hand sanitisers in bulk. Its jute and fibre technology department is churning out masks. Both efforts were taken up in consultation with the Bengal government.
