Victoria team ready to meet Covid 19 challenge
Victoria Hospital a government run hospital affiliated with Bangalore Medical College is one of the largest hospital in Bangalore,and south India. Started by Shri Krishnaraja Wodeyar, the then Maharaja of Mysore in 1901, the hospital is a medical hub, well known for referral tertiary public healthcare facility, houses the Emergency and Trauma Care Centre, PMSSY Superspeciality Hospital, and Vani Vilas childrens Hospital. This iconic hospital is now a covid 19 designated hospital for Bangalore city with world class facilities. and doctors manning the covid 19 ward 24×7. The frontline of warriors at this hospital consists of teams with doctors to robots who are rendering service to mankind !
History of Bangalore city is never complete without connecting the link to this vast Victoria hospital which started in year 1901. When the city was grappling with outbreak of plague and this hospital facility acted a nerve centre for medical relief, and as if to say history repeats this hospital is now once again prepared to handle the covid 19 cases and ready to treat the corona virus cases ,
The hospital which has over 5 blocks and bulit in a systematic colonical structure has over 1200 beds in the complex but for covid 19 , 550 beds are reserved . The social distancing is also observed in the wards and also placing of beds which are placed 6 metres apart . There are 5 different blocks with a different exit point for each. The emergency and trauma block is now a covid 19 ward . On The frontline are corona medical warriors led by Dean Dr Jayanti and her task force team with senior doctors, who ensure that every call in distress is addressed.
Dr S Jayanti , Dean and Director of Victoria hospital says , ” We are eady to meet any challenge that is posed by Corona Virus. The Covid-19 ward and the team is working day and night to ensure best care to the existing patients who are in hospital quarantine” The hospital is known for emergency care and trauma care and is equipped with a state of Art ICU facility with ventilators . The beds in wards have oxygen facility too.so far about 53 corona patients were treated in this ward. and at the moment 35 patients are undergoing treatment. The covid 19 ward is connected to the control room in the opposite block from where a set of doctors constantly monitor the patients well being and reports . They also interact with the patients and if required even provide psychological counselling to the patients thru this control room . Soon the wards will have an added feature using robotics to serve food and medicine to the patients .
Dr Rakshith says , ” We monitor the ward using the tecnology and the robotic delivery mechanism that the ward has. We very closely monitor the situation and as and when intevention is required we step in to attend the need”.
The state government announced that this hospital will treat Covid -19 patients since then arrangements have been made to shift the other patients to different govt hospitals in the city and planned surgeries stopped.
The 550 bed facilty for corona patients will largely be used with staff trained to handle the COVID 19 cases. The medical staff nurses and health workers have been sensitized and trained in PPE handling. treatment protocols. and other required procedures.The doctors deployed for the covid 19 care are also given accomadation for their quarantine and duty shifts.
The hospital also has an exclusive lab to test the covid 19 cases . A designated ambulance is also stationed here to help transport the covid 19 patients to the hospital. A data base is also being maintained to monitor the covid 19 cases across the state . The hospital also acts as referance point for other districts in the state effected by Corona pandemic.
