Bengaluru areas stay submerged, politics takes over
The IT sector in Bengaluru continued to bear the brunt of floods on Tuesday , as most IT parks remained inaccessible on Tuesday as well. Though the rains gave the much needed relief but the water levels in many areas did not recede as water channels continue to be blocked. Residential complexes , especially in Bellandur area on city outskirts were under 5 feet of water on Tuesday morning. Residents had to use tractors and rafts to move out of the residential complex
After coming under fire from citizens and opposition parties , the Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said “ several residential localities in Bengaluru had to face flood-like situation due to ‘unplanned’ and ‘misrule’ of the previous Congress Government”.
Talking to reporters at his residence here on Tuesday, he said the previous government recklessly gave permission to build houses, apartments in tanks, tank bund and in the buffer zones. “The Congress is solely responsible for the present day situation” he said.
The Chief minister previous Congress Government never thought about the management of tanks. But the incumbent government has taken it as a challenge and released Rs 1500 crore towards the construction of the much-needed Rajakaluve ( water canals).
In a bid to tackle encroachment on water bodies and water channels , encroachments worth Rs 300 crore had been removed to help ease the flood situation.
The city is seeing an unprecedented crisis , as it maybe well till the weekend that the water supply to parts of the city may remain cut off.It may be recalled that due to heavy rains, water rushed into the TK Halli pumping station in Karnataka’s Mandya district, causing an interruption in the drinking water supply for the people of Bengaluru. The pumping station provides most of Cauvery’s drinking water supply to Bengaluru, and it is expected to take two to three days to restore normal operation
The IT companies are upset that they have worked for a better bengaluru along with governments to ensuring life on Outer Ring Road is seamless during the construction phase, and have been participating in coordination groups and in touch with the authorities of BMRCL, BBMP, BMTC, BTP etc. as active members for growth and development of ORR infrastructure.
It was after 2017 floods near Ecoworld that concerns on encroachment had been raised concerns regarding the issue that’s now repeated as many companies feel that the administration did not respond to the concerns. “But not much was done to resolve the issue permanently, while ORR continued to grow at a rapid pace.
2019, the Chief Minister visited ORR campus after we escalated lack of focus on fixing the infra issues. List of demands were made and he approved projects but very little progress has been made” said Manas Das President of ORRCA .
The industry feels that after 2 years of Covid induced Work From Home, companies had expected infra to be better but after coming back in July this year they feel infrastructure has completely collapsed.
“While govt is seeking investments in the State, companies who have made significant investment in ORR are disappointed at the lack of focus from the government to address the current infrastructure issues. Authorities need to focus on scaling up the infrastructure to meet the current and future demands of the IT companies on ORR” says Manas Das
