HDK and Congress Meet PM on Kodagu rehabilitation
The damage caused by Kodagu floods finally got the attention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi who assured CM H.D.Kumaraswamy led delegation that Union Government would sent two teams of Officers to assess the damages in Kodagu and neighbouring coastal and Malnad districts of Karnataka.
The delegation led by Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Monday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and appraised the situation in Kodagu and neighbouring districts of Malnad and Coastal Karnataka due to floods and the drought situation in the Interior districts of Karnataka and urged him to announce a Rs 2000 Crore package for rehabilitation and creating infrastructure in flood ravaged districts and release the Grants. Prime Minister positively responded to their requests.
The high intensity and heavy rainfall during successive months lead to severe landslides / mudflows and Floods in Kodagu and adjoining districts during Aug 2018 which has left thousands of people homeless and many people and animals lost their lives. The rainfall recorded during 2nd week of August was the highest ever since last 118 years which caused agriculture and horticulture and high value plantation crop losses and severe damage to houses and infrastructure. The loss incurred in these districts is estimated to be Rs. 3705.87 Crore. Hence the members of the delegation including former Prime Minister H.D. Devegowda appealed to the Prime Minister to announce a Rs. 2000 Crore package and release the grant immediately for the rehabilitation and for providing infrastructure in Kodagu and other districts.
While its floods which caused damage in Kodagu and Coastal region , the delegation sought the Union Government’s attention about the drought situation in the 17 districts of interior Karnataka and said that the losses are being assessed which will be finalised by cabinet subcommitte tomorrow and a detailed proposal will be sent accordingly.
Former Prime Minister and MP from Hassan H.D. Devegowda, Deputy Chief Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara, Revenue Minister R.V. Deshpande, Water Resources Minister D.K.Shivakumar, PWD Minister H.D. Revanna, RDPR Minister Krishna Bairegowda were in the delegation. The BJP MP’s however were conspicuous by their absence . The state BJP President B S Yeddyurappa said , that it was Chief Minister’s meeting with the Prime Minister and the question of the BJP MP’s joining the delegation did not arise
