Relief work picks up as Karnataka stands with Kodagu
After two days of supervising the relief and rescue work in Kodagu district , Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy shared the official details of the massive losses in the district . Speaking to the media he said ,” After the Aeriel Survey conducted in Kodagu to review the flood situation. I am sorry to say,In all, 12 persons have lost their lives, 845 houses have been damaged out of which, 773 houses are partially damaged. 123 kms of road, 58 bridges, 278 Government buildings and 3800 electric poles have been damaged “. Detailing the large scale destruction , he also shared information on the rescue operations , which were a huge challenge.
As of Monday noon , 4320 people have been rescued and brought back safely to relief centres. In total, 1725 specially trained experts from KSRP, SDRF, Army, Navy and Air force, NCC, Home guards and District Administration had been deployed in rescue operations. The state government has set up 41 relief centres in Kodagu and 9 relief centres in Dakshina Kannada have been set up and a total of 6620 aggrieved are sheltered in these relief centres.
The biggest challenge of nourishing the stranded , was met with adequate supply of drinking water and milk distribution in these centres. NGO’s and public managed to help the adinistration and ensured that all corners of the district were covered. The state government facilitated even distributon by collecting the Relief material sent to Kodagu by storing it in APMC yard at Madikeri and is being distributed through Panchayats.
5 teams of doctors has been deployed to prevent the spread of contagious diseases. 10 teams of Revenue officers have been deployed to oversee relief work. In addition a voluntary team of doctors from M S Ramaiah college , Bengaluru also rreached Kodagu.
To clear the land slides , road blocks and ensure connectivity , PWD department has commissioned 60 JCBs, 20 4 wheel drive Boleros have been deployed for relief work to ensure that the teams reach far flung areas. Government has instructed Officers to use local work force under the MNREGA scheme to clear the debris in Kushalanagar, Suntikoppa, Somavarapete and other places. . CHESCOM /KPTCL have sent special teams to restore electric supply in rural and urban areas.
Roads connecting Bhagamandala- Napoklu: Ayyageri, Sulya and Madikeri have been damaged in several places and the PWD is taking up restoration work on war footing.
Action has been initiated to distribute an interim relief of Rs. 3800/- per family to the 5800 distressed people who are sheltered in relief centres. Action has been initiated to reach groceries and other essential commodities to the 50,000 aggrieved families through 10 mobile distribution units. As schools in Kodagu district were closed for 20 days in three months, it has been instructed to complete the syllabus by taking special classes. It has also been directed to issue new set of uniforms and text books to students as the previous ones were damaged.
Chief minister appealed to thepeople to support Kodagu ,”It is requested that donations and contributions for relief work in Kodagu may be remitted through Bank to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund” . The call got a huge resonse as several came forward.
