Edappadi Palaniswami chosen AIADMK candidate for chief ministership
Amidst the ongoing turf war between the two factions of the ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu, Edappadi K Palaniswami was announced as the chief ministerial candidate for the upcoming election in Tamil Nadu. The announcement was made by Deputy CM O Panneerselvam, amid the faction war between the two camps in AIADMK led by Palaniswami and Paneerselvam. O Paneerselvam a Sasikala loyalist has been engaged in a standoff with EPS over the 11-member panel as well who will be the CM face for AIADMK with no Jayalalithaa at the helm.
Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and other AIADMK leaders arrived at the party office in Chennai, for a meeting over 2021 assembly elections in the state on Wednesday. CM candidate Edappadi K Palaniswami also announced an 11-member steering committee for the 2021 Tamil Nadu elections. Interestingly six of the 11 members are from the OPS camp which is being seen as a bid to placate O Panneerselvam who had been eyeing the CM chair for long. The decision puts to end any further speculation on the matter but raises questions about the dominance of jailed AIADMK leader Sasikala.
The development seems to pave the way for an alliance between the ruling AIADMK and the Bhartiya Janata Party which is keen to make a strong base for itself in the state.
Palaniswami on Wednesday made the announcement of the 11-member steering committee while a sombre-looking Panneerselvam made the announcement of EPS being the CM face. Ahead of the big announcement, O Paneerselvam on Monday broke his silence on the standoff with Palaniswami over who should be the ruling AIADMK’s chief ministerial candidate for 2021 assembly elections.
O Paneerselvam took to Twitter on Monday and said all his decision were taken keeping in mind the interests of the people of the state and the AIADMK cadres. Quoting the Bhagavad Gita, O Paneerselvam said, “Whatever happened, has happened for good. Whatever is happening, is also for the good and whatever is going to happen, that, too, will be for the good.”
